Over the last few days we have been joining in the Divali celebrations here in Chaguanas.
There was a week long festival of indian dance, music and culture at a large convention centre just down the road from us. The girls loved the dancing and shopping for bangles and we went to see the fire works on the eve of Divali. The masses of people and cars leaving the event remeinded me of scenes from disaster movies, the 3 lane highway was at acomplete stand still with cars, pedestrians, police everywhere...
At school the girls dressed in indian clothes for the day. For Divali itself we were invited to a party accross the road from where we live and joined 50 other friends and neighbours for food, lighting 200 diyas (lamps) and cricket (England beat T&T by one run...relief!) It was a great evening and something we will never forget. All very different to Grange-over-sands!
