Dimanche Gras

Now this is what I call a fancy dress competition! No little red riding hoods or buzz lightyears!
We had a fantastic evening (5pm - 1am) at the finals of the Carnival Kings and Queens competion. The costumes as you can see were outstanding. These ones didnt even win! After the costumes had been judged it was the Calypso finals and we heard 16 songs, and the winner this year was 'Chalkdust', a popular choice. We bought 'cheap tickets' which meant we were not under cover and got a little wet whaen there was shower, but it did mean there was nothing between our seats and the stage apart from a few press photographers. We all felt part of the show as we were regularrly showered in paper stars and hearts blasted from cannons. ( We were a bit too close to the pyro-technics for Zoe's liking but Dave Weatcroft would have loved it) At one point the fireworks came raining down on us! The show closed at 1am with a Soca star performing a current hit song and fire works going off in the background. T&T may not be able to organise a road network, policing or decent public health care, but they sure can organise a great party!

Carnival 2K9...

Zoe and Iona found some of their school friends amongst the crowds, here they are with Cheyna

Carnival 2K9 has arrived. On Sat we went into Port of Spain to watch the 'Kiddies carnival'. As you can see from the photos the costumes are amazing. We spent the whole day listening to music, waving our rags and enjoying the party. This is the prelude to the main event which occurs Mon/Tuesday.

This was the scene at the end of school following their carnival celebration. There was a Calypso competition and a mas band competition. All the children dressed up, sang and then went crazy dancing to the latest soca carnival tunes. It was great, much better than a school disco!

Our 2 gorgeous girls at the end of our last day on the beach here. Life doesn't get much better than this.

Surfs Up

The waves a Maracas are great and Iona and Zoe love diving in them

Buried alive
As you can see we have had a fantastic day at Maracas beach this Saturday. We are making the most of our last few weeks here in Trinidad. The girls start their last week of school today and are practicing calypso for a concert next Friday.

Visit to the Zoo, again...

Zoe and Iona chilling at the Zoo in port of Spain last Sat whilst Ruth was at a meeting. It is a great little zoo our favourite animals are the Giant Otters, reptile house full of local snakes and the Ocelots.

Zoe and dad, enjoying our time together...
